Birds of Cañada

we drove to south san francisco to pick up a used SP303 and within an hour figured out that the best way to use this simple piece of machinery was to just patch its output directly back into its input. this creates a feedback loop whenever you use the external input or try to sample something. you can then apply effects and adjust multiple stages of gain to sculpt the feedback into something else entirely.

SoundWIRE concert friday at CCRMA

CCRMA SoundWire
im performing in a concert on friday consisting of about 40 players...like a big orchestra.

around 10 performers will be in new york
10 or so will be at ucsd in san diego
and then about 20 of us are at CCRMA

its a candy coated cacophony of colliding crashes, clanks, and creaks. no really. it's pretty difficult to coordinate 30+ musicians, especially over the wire and with instruments ranging from classical violin to homecoded-transducer-glitch-distortomatic. yet believe it or not, theres been a couple (read, precisely two) times this semester when we've hit that sweet spot and really made magic.

anyway, i've been playing the harmonica basically cause it's what i have. pauline oliveros (a living legend) sat in last week, offering great words of encouragement; telling us we sucked at first but noting that it was really just our frustration at a continent-wide soundcheck that took just under 2 hours to kind of complete. looking at it that way, it was awesome to see all of our aggression explode, and then subside into quite a tame, melodically sound piece.

anyway, you'd hope it'd be broadcast but i bet most of the tech goes into wiring us into RPI in new york and ucsd in san diego. hopefully youtubes will follow later.
