New Year, New Wave

September is in the air. The most exciting of all months on the Austin social calendar, IMO. New spaces and people, and yet, next verse same as the first. Had a chance this weekend to hit up 3 events...the first New Guild Coop party of the year "around the world" where you go from room to room and try a different drink, the first Rancho Dance party of the new tenants career, and the party the Totally Wreck crew was having at their new warehouse space over on Bolm road. The Coop party sort of had an ironic time-traveler feel to it for me. How i did not get any booty when I was living at one is a mystery to me (due to selective memory) because it is just a bunch of folks getting drunk and then lusty. I guess I didn't have what it takes, but fortunately the result is that I got spit out the other end of the Coop Lifecycle Workshop STD free, so we can call it a wash.

It was also a miraculous night because I got to ride my bike for the first time in 2 months. Next stop would be to truck it down to Rancho and see what those folks were doin with the place. Well, they painted the garage to do movie shoots in it, that was a bit of a disappointment. We were pretty sure the property management company had done it at first, but hey, its their place now. And the backyard was still "yup, its rancho alright." Same hodgepodge of folks drinking and throwing their beer cans on the ground. Only now, thankfully I don't have to pick them up.

The real winner of an event this weekend was last night at the Totally Wreck place. I love the parking lot, and just chilled there for the first hour, hour and a half. It has this very yellow, very Austin lighting for the parking lot. My friend Kate said one time she always knew she was in Austin by the yellow light, and it really could not have been more true than at this parking lot outside their new warehouse space. It was great, basking in the yellow light. It was pretty hot in the room from reports, but I didn't think it was that hot. It was a little loud so that unless you were dancing it made more sense to hang out in the parking lot with the cool kids. really i was just waiting for the night to be almost over to go in there and dance. Hanging out in a parking lot drinking is just where it is at. "Outside the show" (there was a show, but I think I didn't notice. Someone told me it was the best show they had seen in a long time....some sort of sound problems turned into a meltdown / breakdown that somehow involved the crowd and was awesome, or something). Par for the course (in a good way). I'm just glad there seems to be a dedicated space for the New Wavers to have a party once a month or whatever. It is just outside enough that it keeps the riff raff gone, and yet is actually pretty damn close, although I dont know that I want to be biking down Airport, I am probably always going to drive when i go there, or get a ride (plenty of people biked it). Projections by Lori and also Vidkids. I really liked the party because I knew I could just wait around at this one party and all my friends would basically cycle in and around. It was great to catch up with so many folks.

Then at the end of the night the dance party scene was great. There was one girl playing it cool and one guy going nuts, and I could kinda swing how i felt like dancing from one polarity to the other.

RanchO is dead. Long live RanchO

yo! no more shows at the house! its not a big deal. still more shows elsewhere. plus hopefully we can find someone to move in in August who is into it. Reason? Neighbor concerns? Personal refocusing of energies? reasonable? Anyways, we will see what lies just. around. the. corner., but I think its a safe bet that this isn't the last you will hear from those "rancho relaxo dudes," nor do i hope this is the last heard from all the people who came to events at el casa del nosotros as far as radicalness is concerned.

you. are. radical. forrealz.

anyways, more on shit later....sort of a weird time of year, this December thing, I mean. Hope everyone in schools finals are going good!

Roctakon Dream

So last night after the Reverse X Rays tour kickoff and apartment pool after-party, I had a funny little dream about DJ Roctakon. He's from New York City and has been around for awhile, I've never seen him play but his Baltimore remixes on the first Money Lotion record from Turntablelab were a staple of my 2k6/7 DJ sets.

The dude is somewhat notorious in the DJ blogging world for being an asshole. He disses people specifically in blogs (Theo Parrish), makes a lot of comments about things he hates about younger DJs on the Low Budget Board , and isn't ashamed to play top 40 trash for the big dollars. He also likes to make a point of how he makes more money than any DJ who wants to argue with him on the internet.

So, in dream world, I find out he is hosting a party at his house. He lives in New York City, Chinatown from what I've gathered from the blogosphere, but that doesn't really deter me. I end up going to this house party and suddenly all of my friends want to go as well, we're crashing Roctakon's party.

So myself and party crashing company enter the house and suddenly I'm piss drunk, stumbling here and there, and I knock over a lamp. I'm like a drunken sailor, Johnny Depping by way of Keith Richarding my way through this party of people wearing really trendy hats whose blogs I've probably downloaded disco songs from.

Luckily no one seemed to notice that I was floating like a sailboat around this house uninvited. I manage to leave, drive drunk, and get pulled over by two police officers. They come in from my left and right, getting closer and closer to my car and so that i have to slow down and they block my path in a V formation. And then I woke up. I usually wake up in situations like that. Except a few nights ago when I killed a police officer instead of waking up. I'm hard sometimes.

Here's the "promo video" for Roctakon's new mix, which has been posted on about every blog I read.

Casa Vista post 1

So apparently their is this thing called "music blogs". According to a reporter for the Austin Chronicle they are all the "new rage." I read about it on wikipedia and then I figured it was time to get in on the action. Call it "That Reverse X-Rays Kid," or call it "the lease is already signed on Rancho Relaxo but that was taken" (ranchorelaxo.blogspot.com ... lets see if this blog gets better). Really what made me excited to do this was the discovery that there are now blog aggregates that you can link to like Rotten Tomatoes, except for music blogs. Once this gets going a bit I will do that (elbo.ws and the hype machine are the two that wikipedia had listed)

So where am I tonight? I played music with Taft and some of his friends for the first time. They have a nice set up on 28th and a half. They've got a piano but the highlight was these Gibson acoustic guitars. Those guys have a Dylan vibe and can all sing. They are playing their first show proper at the Parlor in about a week, but I dont think they have a name yet. There was a party at Jenny Alvorado's tonight that the Strange Boys played among others but I couldn't go because I had my second to last shift of work for Jimmy Johns. I locked my keys in the car on the job which was embarassing. Shane went and said it was cool.

Tomorrow morning (eer...in a few hours) my mom is going to drive me to Fort Worth where we are going to watch my Uncle Martin compete in the Van Cliburn piano competition. He is in the amateurs bracket but its already a big honor, because they only accept 75 amateur contestants to be juried. I think he must be practicing alot because he is going to play the piece that he won the Dallas High School piano player competition with back in the 60s and hes played it for me before but there were parts he couldn't get through. I'm excited, he goes on at 1:30.

I have mp3s I want to post here soon once i figure out how. One in particular that my recently ex-roommate and all around awesome guy Jeff Cooper ripped off my vinyl for me. Its a dub track off KTW Dub by Junior Dan.
