In these tough, tough economic times, it becomes important to cut back, and if there is one thing that definitely means, its trying to score some meals at the rents. At some point since me and my brother went to college, my parents stopped shopping anywhere but Costco, meaning they have large tubs of certain items, and nothing in the way of standard grocery fair. They also now eat way healthier, meaning unless I want to dig into the gallon of non-fat yogurt (I dont) I am left with few options. Fortunately, one of those options is eggs, and their spice collection is pretty good.
I went to the dentist today at noon, and by the time I got back (i hadn't eaten breakfast) I had worked up quite an appetite. I wanted to try and take things to the next level with my eggs, and this is what I made (it was delicious).
4 eggs
a little bit of water
[[[1/2 a red bell pepper
3 mushrooms
a can of diced Hatch Chilis]]] - all cooked down first, with the hatch chilis thrown in towards the end
some Havarti Cheese
salt, pepper, curry, Schezwan seasoning (which is garlic, ginger, and red pepper base i think), red pepper, a little bit of cinnamon
Tabasco brand spicy Worcestershire sauce
cooked in oil. remember, pepper tastes best if you throw it in in the middle.
I think that was it. It was great. Basically I smelled the Schezwan seasoning side by side with some curry and figured I could get away with combining the two. I'd previously been making eggs with red pepper, yellow curry, and cinnamon as a spice base, so that recipe got thrown in, along with some chunkier stuff that I traditionally enjoy in eggs. I didn't have any onion, otherwise there would have been some of that in there too. First I tried to make it an omelet out of it, but there was too much shit and it ended up as scrambled eggs.
But yeah, pretty good shit, try it out sometime if you like. I recommend Schezwan seasoning, its a good combo and good flavor and you can mix it in with your regular spices. I'll tell you another thing, if there had been any Allspice, I probably would have thrown that in too, and I'll bet it would have been pretty good. When I was in Athens there was this can of whole Allspices and you can just crush them in your fingers and they taste real fresh, just like whole peppercorns.

Friday 9-18 (tonight!) at Ranch 616 - from 8 to 11ish. Should be classy.
On Thursdays I usually play records at Bird's Barbershop on east 6th from 5-8. I'm pushing that gig an hour earlier, form 4-7, in order to make it over to the coffee shop formerly known as Clementine, now Thunderbird Manor. I'll be playing some funky stuff from 8 to 10. Bring your study materials.
Then next Saturday I'll be playing an art show at Bird's on east 6th. There'll be a bunch of great art and also a trunk show so you can buy some jewelry for your girl.

Socks and Sandles
In a development sure to tickle Saucepot's funny bone, I got off my sweaty ass long enough yesterday to truck it down to the wal-mart and purchase some brand spankin new 7 dollar Corona flip-flops. What was the threshold ruptured so severely to cause this drastic action? Really it was quite simple...I ran out of clean socks. Not only had I run out of clean socks; when I went to my suitcase I discovered that outside the dirty pair I had been wearing, I was down to one brown sock. Maybe this tour should have been called "Socks Across America." So I bought some sandals, and I gotta say, I have never been happier.
So I guess you could say I am settled in, or that things are down to normal. To my own amazement I drank half a gallon of grapefruit juice in the past two days, just through the natural course of things. Using the spices afforded to me on the Secret Squirrel Spice Rack I successfully experimented a new combo for egg-in-the-middles this morning. The combo is: yellow curry, red cayenne pepper, and cinnamon. Also salt and pepper, and Ill bet you could add sugar as well if you wanted. Its good. The spice combo goes back to a show RXR played in Dallas about a year ago.
There is a show tonight (quite soon really) at SS that I am opening. A band from DC called Hume and Bubbly Mommy Gun. This show is gonna be great, I can feel it. There is a keg for Joe's 21st birthday (he drums for BMG, an Athens band that Mercer and Greg from Quiet Hooves is also in) and has a broken finger, so presumably we are gonna get him wasted before he has to go out and drum all out with a broken finger! One smack could lead to total disaster, and while of course I hope it doesn't happen, they are playing last, and its not like he should be saying "oh i think id better wait to start drinking." Just my 2 cents.
I am gonna play an old ukulele song called "I wondered" which I am mentioning in case my bandmates are interested in reviving it, reggae style. Note to self/bandmates...

Athens Georgia
If you would have told me a month ago that I would be slowly bankrupting myself via pulled pork sandwich purchases, I probably would have told you that sounded delicious and I would have been right. I never want to eat another pulled pork sandwich without cole slaw on it again, that's for damn sure. Today I had one on chibatta bread. Fucking choice. Oh and hey...what about these peaches in season???? yeah! For those of you who didn't know, our brave writer is nestled up in the cozy (cozy here meaning "hot as fuck") Secret Squirrel in gorgeous, Georgious, Athens Georgia. Nights have been idyllically jamweeded away on an air conditioned farm we have been staying at for the past week (I walked into a fortuitous house-sitting arrangement) and my days have been shuffled between various activities, real and imagined. No j/k, that doesn't completely make sense.
One thing I have been doing is reading a lot, which is cool, and something I never do in Austin. I am currently 135 pages through a 588 page book called "Working" by Studs Terkel, which is basically 2-4 pages of people from all walks of life (mechanic, coal miner, receptionist, doorman, writer/producer...its a long book) telling about what they do. Its fascinating and makes me thing about the role of technology in our society. The book was written in the early 1970s, and there are great interviews with people whose memories go back as far as the Great Depression era. I have to finish it as quick as I can because I want to read other books while I am here and I have good time for reading. My schedule is such that I will get caught up in things and every couple days have to recommit myself to a given activity (swimming or reading) because I have missed a day on it.
A couple nights ago I went out to see Marshmallow Coast play at The Caledonia, which from what I understand is a somewhat reputed smaller venue (cap 115). I've always wanted to see them, but I think they don't really come to Austin and they delivered the goods. After the show I went to the merch table and bought a full length LP as well as 2 7"s for a total cost of EIGHT DOLLARS. I asked Andy Gonzales from the band why so cheap and he said "well its Athens" almost apologetically. This town does not really run on money* because no one has any, or at least no one buys shit, so hey why not sell you stuff at something that is probably less than cost, that makes sense to me, sorta, but sorta not.

OK, so the mystique. Yeah, its here all right. Also, I've come to the conclusion that the Austin mystique is well deserved. I'm pretty stoked on Austin at this moment and psyched to see yall when I get back. Its cool seeing projects coming to fruition as far as albums are concerned (Dan Doyle, Brazos, and School Police in the first half of 2009 are coming to mind...the list will go on).
But anyways Athens. Yeah, they got woods here. Woods are the shit. There are mosquitoes and periodic fire ants for sure, but I think there has got to be a strategic way around that. Everyone is super friendly and willing to lend a hand. I made a good decision and bought a new-guy-in-town 12er of High Life so I could have the first interactions with my new roommates be "hey, you want one of these beers?" I would recommend doing that to anyone. Then, when you smoke their weed, its gift exchange.
Its easy to meet people, even easier than Austin, which is I would say a pretty super easy place to meet people for someone new in town. Everyone is constantly playing music and catching rides and doing things together. It's so cool. Tonight I am going to 2 shows. First I am going to see The Brunettes at the Go Bar. They are from New Zealand. Then I am heading over to the 40 Watt to see a band lottery show, with like 40 local bands in different arrangements, similar to what has been done in Austin.

Also, an added hot music tip, check out this band from Baltimore called "Art Department". Just when I thought the Bmore scene was totally dead I hear these guys. Definitely strong Minutemen influence, and I hear alot of Apple O era Deerhoof as well. Weirdo Oh Sees like high-low vocal thing going on, and every song is a minute to a minute and a half pretty much. Some Dirty Projectors-y afro pop guitar in there and maybe later Beefheart in the arrangements. Lately everything sounds like later Beefheart to me....weird.
